Horrible Histories Awesome Egyptians Book Review
What the Egyptians Were Really Like!
It’s true to say that when we are taught history in school many of the violent truths are missed out so as not to upset our delicate little brains. Children can cope with a lot more realism than they are given credit for and Awesome Egyptians leaves out no detail no matter how unpalatable making this book a firm favourite with horrible histories fans. Our children are in no way phased by the truth with such gory facts as how the Egyptians removed the brains from their mummies, a fact of wonder rather than something to frighten them. Our child was absolutely fascinated!
Awesome Egyptians tells us about the Ancient Egyptian era, including thirty Egyptian dynasties, covering the three thousand years this ancient civilisation lasted until it eventually fell under Roman rule. Kids learn about the Pharaohs including one of the most famous, namely, Tutankhamun the boy king - https://www.britannica.com/biography/Tutankhamun, who ascended the throne at the age of ten! Horrible Histories don’t shy away from the facts at all including how Ankhesanamun, King Tut’s wife was expected to marry her own grandfather!
This caused quite an hilarious discussion in our home as the kids imagined how weird it would be to marry grandad! The book has a “test your teacher “section so kids can involve their teacher in their Egyptian history if they wish to, while Ancient Egyptian jokes, grizzly quizzes and blood curdling facts regarding Ancient Egypt are all related in text and pictures in an hilarious fashion. Take for example there is a picture of two Egyptian women standing in front of the pyramids. One says to the other, “I wouldn’t be seen dead in one of those things”. There are lots of similar little puns and jokes like this one throughout the book bringing a smile to the face while keeping the kids thoroughly entertained.
This is yet another worthy read from the Horrible Histories genre. Awesome Egyptians is a book that can be dipped in and out of at leisure, is crammed full of amazing facts and is a firm favourite in our home.
